It takes more than food to fight hunger. A Just Harvest is committed to ending hunger and poverty “until all have plenty and no one is left in need.” Our stakeholders in this vital work include community residents, businesses (local and citywide), community organizations, congregations (local and citywide, elected officials, foundations, and YOU!

Join us Wednesday, October 26th for a groundbreaking celebration honoring Rev. Marilyn Págan-Banks 20th year of serving as Executive Director. With her leadership, A Just Harvest is living into a vision of Community Wellness by “breaking bread and restoring community.”

Silent Auction is Officially Closed!

Thank you to everyone who bid in our Silent Auction to benefit the fight against hunger and poverty in our community. We’ll be getting in touch with the winners to coordinate receiving their prizes!

CONGRATS to Miss Ebony DeBerry for winning the raffle to learn to create a delectable 4-course meal for four from Chef Diane! She is an expert cooking instructor, business owner, and community member of A Just Harvest. 

Chef Diane got her start in kitchens at a small local cafe doing dishes on the weekends.  She stayed in the restaurant industry and worked every position but settled in the kitchen.  She has worked with Charlie Trotter, Chef John Manion, and Sean Myers.  She started her own business, Top of The Food Chain Catering and Cooking Instruction, and has been involved with A Just Harvest for nearly a decade.  She began teaching students in the Agua Program and then went on to volunteer at The Community Kitchen. She also volunteers at The American Legion Tattler Post.

This concert gathers our community: the people of our Rogers Park and North of Howard neighborhood and all the surrounding neighborhoods who make up the A Just Harvest community, alongside the many businesses, corporations, grassroots organizations, and
communities of faith who create community and build power with us to work for social, racial, economic, and environmental justice for every member of our society.

This free event is open and accessible to all neighbors seeking to celebrate with us. Guests will enjoy a celebration of music that showcases the richness of our local community, while learning about the work of A Just Harvest. Funds raised through the 2024 Freedom Concert will support A Just Harvest’s work toward feeding hungry people, organizing for an equitable justice system, and creating economic opportunity.
Following the concert, we will invite all attendees to travel with us to the nearest early voting location, to exercise our right to vote together.

A Just Harvest (AJH)  is seeking apprentices for AJH’s  The Accompaniment Project (TAP). TAP provides participants one to two year apprenticeship opportunities to Rogers Park area residents who face employment barriers. Barriers may include those who are justice-involved or face other obstacles to gainful employment. TAP apprentices will work with one of three AJH programs: Urban Agriculture, Community Kitchen, or Community Engagement programs. During their participation in TAP, apprentices will learn program specific job skills. In addition, TAP will offer holistic support for apprentices, including employer paid healthcare, case manager support and coaching, workforce training, and life skills workshops. Apprenticeships are hourly positions for 30 hours per week at $15 per hour, including coaching and training sessions.

In order to qualify to participate you must: 

• Meet one or more of the following criteria:
  • Be from and/or live in the North of Howard community.
  • Have a barrier to employment, such as a criminal record, no work experience, lack of reportable work experience in the formal economy, etc.
• As well as the ability and commitment to meet all of the following expectations:
  • Show up to all shifts on time and ready to work.
  • Sign and follow attendance policy in regards to absences or tardiness.
  • Maintain a high standard of work, including working independently and as a team.
  • Be willing to attend general apprentice meetings and coaching sessions.

Program Schedule, Duration & Pay:

• Apprenticeships are 1-2 years long 
• $15/hour
• 30 hours/week

Apprentices programs:

Urban Agriculture (5 positions) – The program aims to create and nurture collective healing through cultivating plants. Apprentices will develop and maintain green spaces, provide mentorship to children in afterschool and summer programs, and grow food for the community. Extensive manual labor is a required. Work is dirty and is performed in all weather conditions including hot, cold, and wet days.

Community Kitchen (3 positions) – The program aims to directly address the food and nutritional needs of the community. Apprentices will fill one of the following roles: kitchen sanitation, veteran outreach or support the food pantry.

Community Engagement (3 positions) – The program aims to deepen relationships and build community by giving residents space to develop the power to improve their lives and the community. Apprentice will organize community building events and support local entrepreneurship in order to spur community and economic development.

Covid Safety:

All apprentices are required to be fully vaccinated and must submit proof of vaccination in order to start work.
